News » Todd Warnick2025-05-29 As the Euroleague season concludes, BasketNews Referee Consultant Todd Warnick examines how referee problems increased and were magnified during the 2024-25 season, and what might be done to improve officiating next year and in the years to come. It's hardly a rosy or optimistic picture. It's challenging for many people to know where to begin when discussing Euroleague refereeing.
2025-05-28 After a rough opening quarter for the referees in the 2025 Euroleague final, which included errors in judgment and questionable game management, the officiating mostly settled down for the remainder of the game. However, there was a rough patch in the middle of the 3rd quarter and again near the end.
2025-05-24 During and after their 2025 Final Four semifinal loss to Fenerbahce, 82-76, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens expressed some unhappiness, to say the least, with the officiating. As covered by BasketNews, Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos aggressively confronted the referees at halftime of the Panathinaikos-Fenerbahce semifinal game.
2025-05-07 BasketNews Referee Consultant Todd Warnick devotes this Give Me Control column to the two Game 5 Euroleague 2024-25 playoff thrillers. While there weren't as many referee errors as the Euroleague has sometimes seen during the past year and in the playoffs, the types of officiating mistakes made in these two games were representative of what has been seen all season.
2025-05-04 Potential closeout games are especially challenging not just for teams, but for referees as well, and three Game 4s of the 2024-25 EuroLeague playoffs certainly didn't disappoint. In this Give Me Control column, BasketNews Referee Consultant Todd Warnick takes a comprehensive look at some of the key referee decisions in these games and discusses a number of issues.Â
2025-05-02 It's a given that referees are human beings and that there are going to be at least some officiating errors in every game. What would be "normal", especially at playoff time, is that hopefully, the number of referee mistakes will not be excessive, they will break out between the teams approximately evenly, and obvious bad decisions will be avoided. Â
2025-05-01 What happens when coaches coach, players play, and referees are mostly consistent in their decision-making throughout the game, even drawing an early line on inappropriate behaviors? BasketNews Referee Consultant Todd Warnick examines Game 3 playoff matchup between Real Madrid and Olympiacos (80-72), in which Dzanan Musa wasn't pleased with the officiating (at least at halftime).
2025-04-25 In his post-game press conference following his team's home loss to Anadolu Efes Istanbul in Game 2 of the Euroleague 2024-25 playoffs, Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman said that the first two games of the series were officiated well for both sides.Â
2025-04-24 BasketNews Referee Consultant Todd Warnick takes a look at some very good – and a few less good – aspects of officiating in the first games of the 2024-25 Euroleague playoffs. He also suggests some immediate lessons that the referees should internalize from Game 1 of the Panathinaikos-Anadolu Efes series.Â
2025-04-22 The Euroleague has announced that, like last season, 28 referees have been assigned to the 2025 playoffs. This continues a trend begun in 2024 of spreading out playoff opportunities among a greater number of referees as opposed to using a significantly smaller but, one might argue, an overall superior group, as was the case in previous years. Â
2025-04-16 Referee controversy marred Tuesday night's Play-In showdown between Bayern Munich and Crvena Zvezda, in which the German team eventually prevailed in overtime 97-93.Â
2025-04-06 Even in the Round 33 overtime thriller between Crvena Zvezda Merdianbet Belgrade and Anadolu Efes Istanbul, the EuroLeague referees continued to be challenged by issues that they have faced – and often plagued them – all season: block-charge situations, traveling, act of shooting, illegal screens, referee teamwork, and positioning. Â
2025-04-01 Shaquille McKissick, TJ Shorts, Nadir Hifi, Carsen Edwards, Theo Maledon… Anyone would put them at the top of a list of EuroLeague's quickest, most athletic, and dynamic players.  What else do they have in common?
2025-03-29 Paris Basketball's speed combined with a full and hostile crowd at Panathinaikos’ AKTOR Athens’ OAKA arena provided a special challenge to the referees. In Round 32, Panathinaikos cut a 17-point deficit at the beginning of the 4th quarter (69-86) to just one point, but couldn’t quite close the deal in a tough 98-101 loss to Paris Basketball.Â
2025-03-16 Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman had a lot to say about the officiating in last night's Round 29 Greek derby, which Olympiacos won 76-74. Ataman often complains about officiating after losses, but he may also have a point. And what about Olympiacos head coach Georgios Bartzokas? Might he have some complaints, too?
2025-02-09 EuroLeague referees, not once but twice this past week, used the Instant Replay System (IRS) to correct almost identical mistakes that should never have been made in the first place. In both situations, the officials made additional rule errors that had to be corrected later in the game. The other Rounds 25 and 26 games were not free of other obvious errors as well.
2025-02-02 Give Me Control takes a deep dive into the second half of the Belgrade Derby and the last foul called on Sterling Brown with 1.0 seconds left in the game, which ultimately led to Nemanja Nedovic’s game-winning free throws.
2025-01-31 Last week in Round 23, a missed traveling call led to Mario Hezonja's buzzer-beater and Real Madrid's 90-89 victory over Spanish rival Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. But did the tables turn last night, and did Baskonia get the same break from the referees on Trent Forrest's basket with 0.5 seconds left, which gave them an 88-86 victory over FC Barcelona?Â
2025-01-25 Mario Hezonja's game-winner against Baskonia, which secured Real Madrid's victory, 90-89, has raised big doubts. Baskonia may have reasons to feel aggrieved by the officiating in their Round 23 loss.
2025-01-24 In a season already full of referee controversies, the EuroLeague may have found a new way to confound its fans, coaches, and players during last night's Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens come-from-behind victory over Zalgiris Kaunas.
