Andrew Wiggins reportedly has been excluded from the Canadian Olympic team due to trade concerns by the Golden State Warriors, who aim to prevent any potential injury while negotiating his departure.
Andrew Wiggins is out of the Canadian Olympic picture, according to Doug Smith. The Golden State Warriors are being cautious with the veteran as they look to trade him.
To prevent any potential injury that could affect his trade prospects, Wiggins reportedly has been restricted from playing for Canada. Despite this, his name was included in Canada's 20-man roster announced for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Canadian team opens camp later on Friday.
Wiggins' last appearance for the national team was in the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, Canada. He impressed with averages of 21.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over three games, although Canada ultimately missed out on the Tokyo Olympics.
This time, Canada secured a direct berth in the Paris Olympics by finishing third in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Wiggins did not participate in the previous year.
Reports on Wednesday indicated that the Warriors are actively seeking a trade partner for one of their core players. Wiggins, in particular, is set to be "aggressively dangled" in the upcoming trade window.
During the Warriors' journey to their sixth NBA title in the 2022 Finals, Wiggins averaged 18.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game against the Boston Celtics.
However, his productivity has declined over the past two years. In the latest season, Wiggins posted career-low averages of 13.2 points in 27 minutes per game.
The forward is under contract for the next two seasons, with a player option worth $30.2 million for the 2026-27 season.
