Despite being eliminated (63-76), Papanikolaou remains optimistic about the future.
"Our journey since June included tough games and big challenges," Papanikolaou told the Greek national broadcaster ERT. "Despite the elimination and our desire to bring joy and pride to the Greek people, I am happy for these players and proud of the effort we made over two months."
He acknowledged the hard work of everyone involved with the team.
Reflecting on the tournament, Papanikolaou acknowledged the mixed emotions following their elimination.
"There is certainly some bitterness, but I will smile because Greece showed in this tournament that we can look big teams in the eye, and this might be a sign for the future," said Papanikolaou.
He expressed hope for the team to stay healthy and to have the best possible roster for the next season.
"When the flag calls, you have to be there. It is a great pride to wear this jersey and play for your country," Papanikolaou added, emphasizing the honor of representing Greece.
Papanikolaou pointed out the efforts of all the players during the Olympics.
"You can see it in everyone's efforts here at the Olympic Games," he said.
However, he admitted that the team deviated from their defensive plan against Germany, which affected their performance.
"We played against the world champions; it was not easy, and I am proud of this team's effort," he concluded.
