NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the league is preparing to seriously explore expansion this summer, with international destinations like Canada and Mexico City in the mix.

Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Silver confirmed that while expansion is not guaranteed, it will be a topic of discussion during the Board of Governors meeting at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this July.

“This is the summer we’re going to look at it seriously,” Silver said.

The Commissioner noted that the NBA now connects with over a billion people each year and said that adding another U.S. city may not drive major growth.

“Adding another U.S. city… It’s unclear how much growth we’ll get as a result of that,” Silver explained, pointing to concerns about potential talent dilution and impacts on TV revenue.

Still, Silver emphasized that certain cities—both domestic and international—could provide added value. He pointed to markets north and south of the U.S. border as promising options.

“Over time, maybe there’s more we can do in Canada and Mexico City,” Silver added.

Mexico City has hosted regular-season games and is already home to the G League’s Capitanes, signaling a strong NBA presence in the region.

In Canada, the Toronto Raptors remain the country’s only NBA team, but cities like Vancouver and Montreal have long been discussed as possible homes for a second franchise.

The NBA last expanded in 2004 with the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets).
